   Unpredicted Possibility     

“Unpredicted possibility” is a concept design kinetic sculpture for the Advanced Institute of Convergence Technology in Korea. This piece symbolizes the status of the institute by self-shaping itself with various movements. The institute pursues collaborative research in the application of the latest technologies in IT, BT and NT, with the objective of commercialization. Researchers from different fields integrate each others’ specialities and promote convergence technology.

Space is defined by the people and activities.

The best way of representing this institute is to reveal what is happening there. In other words, the researchers’ daily activities and their on-going projects among different labs would depict and identify this institute.

From this perspective, the challenges of this project were:

- collecting researchers data in two layers : daily and work
- designing a kinetic system correlated to the collected data
- simple mechanical structure, but various movements as result


This kinetic sculpture will be at the main entrance in a high-ceiling hall way. Its spatial characteristic allows for easy maintenance and impressive appeal.



[Data structure]



- Valuing daily activities
The institute encourages collaboration and convergence among people and labs, so the activities are valued based on a convergence perspective. For example, if there is one person in a room, we can say its convergence value is “1.” If there are two people and they stay at each corner without talking, we can say its convergence value is “2.” However, if two people get closer and talk, we can say its convergence value is “4.”

- Valuing work activities
Valuing work activities is a similar process to valuing daily activities. The value differs according to different fields integration, such as how many labs and how long the project is proposed.

[Sensor structure]



The sensing system converts original data (image and sound) to valued data and deletes the original ones regularly to avoid exposing privacy. We assumed 300~400 sensing modules needed to be installed covering the entire building, which has 4 sections.


[Applied Design]



Each panel is correlated to a section which was covered by a certain number of sensing modules. (ex: panel no. 1 reacts to the data collected from section 1 which is covered by sensor no.1 to 5)

Default Shape



There are no activities. The piece remains the default shape.



[Movement structure]



- According to daily activities
Each panel can move along a triangular path. Movement to the top-center represents the value of sound convergence, bottom-left represents network convergence, and bottom- right represents distance convergence. Each panel moves from the biggest value to the smallest.

-According to on-going projects
Labs in collaboration will have the same occasional value. Their panels will stay at the same height until the completion of the project. Viewers will notice which labs are working together easily by the height difference of the panels.








[Comments]

The feedback from clients was mainly about maintenance and movement. There are issues of safety and maintenance when hanging heavy structures in public spaces, which obviously must be taken seriously. For easy maintenance, the entire system should be able to be raised and lowered easily. Our design system will use a heavy duty lift to ensure safe and easy access.

The client hoped for the installation to move about dynamically every minute. This however, is really dependent on the client. As the movement is a direct reflection of how people act in the institute, it is up to them to encourage the people to be more active and communicate more frequently.
